My Love For Haitian Food

Its hard being a PROUD Haitian-American. When most people think of Haitians first thought usually is  one of disgusts. There have been many many many occasions where I informed people of my native background and the initial response is almost always "Really? You don't look Haitian. You are Pretty for a Haitian." I often wonder what does a Haitian look like? And how can some people think that an entire nation consists of unattractive people? To me that just ignorant. What also is ignorant is thinking that our food is linked with how we look.

Haitian food is very similar most West Indian cuisines. If you love Creole food from New Orleans then you my friend will love Haitian Food. One of my favorite places to enjoy Haitian food, other than at home of course, is Kombit in Park Slope, Brooklyn.

Kombit is small and intimate. It inspires the community with the appreciation of the rich culture of Haiti. Kombit   surrounds you with Haitian art and Haitian musical rhythms and creations uplifting in its exuberance. It offers a live band that plays island music, especially konpas. I love to get their fritter combo platter. It has Fried goat, turkey or pork with hush puppies, fried dumplings, sausage, and fried green plantains. Kombit offers a great deal of food, especially if you love rice and beans.

I challenge you to really look past what you DON'T know about Haiti and the culture and look to expand yourself culturally. Food is a great way to start that journey.
